The Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs, announced that Canada is repealing its sanctions against Côte d’Ivoire and Liberia under the United Nations Act.
Pursuant to United Nations Security Council resolutions 2283 (Côte d’Ivoire) and 2288 (Liberia), and based on the ‘remarkable’ progress the nations have made in respect of their internal peace and security, restrictions on exports of arms, on travel, and on financial transactions were lifted in mid-2016. The announcement by the Minister marks the domestic implementation in Canada of these Resolutions.
Canada maintains sanctions regimes of some kind in respect of trade with approximately 20 nations; Global Affairs Canada maintains a list of those sanctions here.
